6:00 – WHICH MOVEMENT WILL BE THE FIRST TO OPEN A FREE AGENCY?
Carlton, Esendon and the Gold Coast are some of the contenders to launch the first step of free will – but if history tells us anything, it will be the “Sun”.
The AFL exchange period officially begins when a free agency opens today at 9.00 EST in which clubs can sign unlimited free agents and submit bids for restricted free agents.
In the latter case, the current club player is given 72 hours to decide whether to comply with the terms of the contract or to release the player.
Gold Coast has taken the first step of a free agency in each of the last two seasons, landing Rory Atkins on the first day of the 2020 exchange period, and making an offer for Brandon Ellis on the first day of 2019.
Stuart Dew’s side could make up three cents, and Mabior Chol intends to sign a four-year deal to be met with Richmond as early as Friday morning.
Incl AFL Commercial Radio,, SevenMitch Cleary said he believes the three players will find new homes on Friday; Chol (unlimited free agent, Richmond – Gold Coast), Jake Kelly (unlimited free agent, Adelaide – Esendan) and George Hewett (free agent with disabilities, Sydney – Carlton).
With Hewett the Swans almost certainly decided not to fit the offer, believing they had enough midfield depth to cover his care.
In 2020, on the first day of the free agency, six steps took place, starting with Atkins signing with Gold Coast, then being proposed / signed by Zack Williams, Isaac Smith, Aidan Cor, Joe Denicher and Jeremy Cameron.
In 2019, only one step took place on the first day of the free agency – the Suns proposal for Alice – while the signing of Fremantle by Rice Conkey started three steps on the first day of the 2018 free agency.
